Stonefield

Stonefield is a relatively new facility bordering the town of Plettenberg Bay. It is owned by Johannesburg businessman, Leo Baxter, who is also a partner in the magnificent Stonefield Estate in Sunninghill, Johanesburg.

Stonefield (Plett) comprises three magnificent pitches, all planted to Paspalum grass and under big gun irrigation. In addition to the fields there is stabling sufficient to house 52 ponies with outside pens for grazing. Numerous comfortable cottages are for the specific purpose of housing participating Stonefield players.

The different climatic conditions and levels of precipitation between Plett (Bitou and Stonefield) and The Crags (Kurland and Kurland Park) will give Plett Polo a measure of flexibility with regard to the scheduling of fixtures. Days of postponing matches due to inclement weather are few and far between with the prevailing drier conditions of Plett.

Leo employs polo manager, Guy Watson (from the well renown Watson family of Underberg) currently a four goal player with loads of polo potential and an excellent horseman. Guy is assisted by Grace Byers who attends to the ponies well being and veterinary needs. Over the past few years Leo has acquired a magnificent string of ponies and employs the services of professionals players Malcolm Borwick and David Sterling – two very exciting players. The latter was instrumental in helping Stonefield win the coveted S.A. Open title in December 2006.
